March is a month of celebration, reflection, and action as we honor Women’s History Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and Social Work Month. It’s a powerful convergence of themes that highlight the strength, resilience, and compassion of women and social workers who make a lasting impact on our communities every day.

Celebrating Women’s History Month This March, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women throughout history and today. From our grandmothers and aunties to our sisters and daughters, women have always been the backbone of our communities. We’ve been holding it down, leading movements, nurturing families, and showing up where it matters. Let’s continue to lift each other up and celebrate the queens who make us proud every day.

Mental Health Awareness and Girls’ Wellbeing Mental health is real, y’all. It’s not just a buzzword—it’s life or death for many of our young girls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 1 in 3 adolescent girls in the U.S. have seriously considered suicide, and more than 60% of teen girls reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2023. These are our babies, our future, and they need us.

Thank God for the sisters out here doing the work in the mental health field. Leaders like Dr. Thema Bryant, President of the American Psychological Association, and Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, founder of Therapy for Black Girls, are paving the way with innovative approaches to mental wellness, inclusivity, and healing. Their work, along with that of countless other female mental health professionals, is a light in dark places, showing our girls that they are loved, valued, and worthy of healing.

Honoring Social Work Month: The Heart of Our Communities Shout out to all my social workers! Y’all are the truth. You show up, you advocate, you love on folks who feel unseen. Social workers are often the unsung heroes in mental health and social services, working tirelessly behind the scenes to uplift individuals and families. As a fellow social worker, I see you. I honor you. Keep doing what you do. You are needed, and you are loved.

A Call to Action Family, this month ain’t just about talking. It’s about action. Let us not only celebrate but also commit to supporting the mental health of girls and young women. Programs like Girl Code and Click4Teens, under the Make-It-Click initiative, strive to provide safe, nurturing environments where girls can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. Together, we can create a future where every girl feels seen, heard, and empowered.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, or connect with the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741. You are not alone, and help is just a call or text away.

Happy Women’s History Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and Social Work Month! Let’s continue to lead, inspire, and uplift one another on this journey toward a healthier, more equitable world for all.

Love and light,

Dr. Sarah Bingham
